South Dakota's Weatherization Assistance Program makes free energy-saving repairs to your home. The goal is to lower your future bills. It is run through the Department of Social Services and delivered by four regional community action agencies. There is no cost to the household. Eligibility is based on your household income. The income guideline is 200 percent of the federal poverty level. Using three-month figures, that is about $7,825 for one person and $16,075 for a family of four.
Renters can qualify too, not just homeowners. A renter is eligible if the landlord gives written permission for the work. So do not skip this help just because you rent. Ask your landlord to sign off.
Some households move up the list. Priority is given to the elderly, people with disabilities, families with children, and single-family homes. Say if any of these describe your home when you apply.
The repairs are chosen to save the most energy. They can include weather-stripping doors and windows, caulking and sealing cracks, and insulating attics, walls, and under floors. They can also include repairing, tuning up, or replacing a heating system that does not work.
