West Virginia WIC

Last updated August 2026

WIC helps West Virginia families eat well during pregnancy and early childhood. It provides nutritious foods, nutrition and breastfeeding counseling, and health monitoring. Recent changes add larger cash-value benefits so families can buy more fruits and vegetables.

The income line is 185 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. That is a higher limit than many programs use, so working families who earn too much for other help often still qualify for WIC.

Eligibility follows life stage. The program serves pregnant women, women breastfeeding an infant up to the baby's first birthday, postpartum women within six months of giving birth, infants under one year, and children ages one through four.

There is a shortcut on income. Families who already get Medicaid, TANF, or SNAP are automatically, or adjunctively, income-eligible for WIC. If you have one of those, you have already cleared the income test.

One more requirement rounds it out. You must show a nutrition risk, which can be medical or dietary. A WIC clinic checks for that at your appointment, so it is part of the visit, not a separate hurdle.

To start, apply through a local WIC clinic. You can search for a clinic online, then bring your documents to a first appointment where staff finish the eligibility check and set up your benefits.

Who qualifies

  • Pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding people, and infants and children up to age 5, who live in West Virginia and have a nutritional need identified at the clinic
  • Family income within the WIC guidelines; being on Medicaid, SNAP, or WV WORKS generally settles the income test, and a parent, grandparent, foster parent, or guardian can apply for a child

You may qualify. The program makes the final decision.
