City of King Utility Billing and Collections
Last updated August 2026
If you cannot pay your City of King water and sewer bill, call the billing office at (336) 985-1100 before the due date. That order matters: once a bill goes late it can pick up late fees, service can be shut off, and unpaid accounts can go to collections. The office at 229 S. Main Street is open Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5pm.
The city does not publish a payment-plan or extension policy, so we cannot promise you one exists. But asking costs nothing, and the billing office is the only party that can hold a disconnection. Explain when you can pay and ask what they can do. If you get an arrangement, get the details in writing or write down the name of the person you spoke with.
Now the money question: who helps pay a water bill here? North Carolina's government water bill program (LIHWAP) ended when its federal funding ran out, and nothing has replaced it. The real options are local. Crisis Control Ministry, (336) 724-7453, pays utility bills for Stokes County residents in short-term emergencies; ask specifically about water when you call. King Outreach Ministry, (336) 983-4357, helps western Stokes families with energy costs and referrals. And NC 211 at 1-888-892-1162 answers around the clock and tracks which funds currently have money.

Common questions
Is there a government program that pays water bills in North Carolina?
Not anymore. LIHWAP, the federal water bill program, ran out of funding, and the state's page for it is gone. Water bill help now comes from charities like Crisis Control Ministry, from NC 211 referrals, and from whatever arrangement your water provider will make.
Will the City of King put me on a payment plan?
The city does not publish a payment-plan policy, so call (336) 985-1100 and ask; only the billing office can say. Do it before the due date, since late bills can face fees and disconnection.
What if my water is already off or there's an emergency after hours?
The city lists an after-hours line, (336) 924-8363, for utility emergencies outside the Monday to Friday, 8:30 to 5 window.
I don't live inside King city limits. Who bills my water?
Parts of Stokes County are on county-billed systems (the county site has portals for Danbury and Stokes water customers), and many rural homes are on wells. Check your bill for the provider name, and call that office about arrangements. The charity options above work the same no matter who your provider is.
Does the deposit come back?
The city charges deposits of $50 for water and $100 for sewer on new accounts. Ask the billing office how and when deposits are applied or returned; their answer is the one that counts.
