Assistance Programs in King / Stokes County, NC

Stokes County does not have its own housing authority. The Piedmont Triad Regional Council runs the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program for Davie, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin counties. Call the Section 8 line at (336) 904-0334; calls are returned within 48 hours. Note: PTRC's site says waiting lists are currently closed, so call to ask when they reopen.

The City of King bills you for city water and sewer. If you cannot pay your bill on time, call the billing office before the due date. Unpaid bills can get late fees and your service can be shut off. You can pay in person at 229 S. Main Street, online, or by phone at 1-844-778-1892.

Crisis Control Ministry helps Stokes and Forsyth County residents in a short-term emergency. They can help pay rent or mortgage, utility bills, and heating fuel. They also run a food pantry where you choose your own food and a free licensed pharmacy. Call to set up a phone or in-person interview.

CIP helps if you are in a heating or cooling emergency, like a shut-off notice in winter or summer. It can pay up to $600 per crisis, sent straight to your utility company. You can get help more than once, up to $600 total per state fiscal year.

If you are behind on your Duke Energy bill, the Share the Light Fund can help pay past-due energy bills, deposits, and reconnection charges. You do not apply to Duke directly. Local agencies hand out the money. Duke's own agency list names The Salvation Army as the Stokes County agency, at (336) 723-6366.

LIEAP pays part of your heating bill once a year. The money goes straight to your heat company, not to you. People age 60 or older and disabled people getting DAAS services apply in December. Everyone else applies starting in January, until money runs out or March 31.

The Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem serves Forsyth, Stokes, Davie, and Yadkin counties. Their website currently says rent and utility bill help is paused because of a funding gap, but limited utility help may open up at times for Duke Energy customers in Stokes County through the Share the Light program. YVEDDI can make your home cheaper to heat and cool for free: adding insulation, sealing drafts, and insulating your water heater and pipes. A companion program (HARRP) can repair or replace broken heating and air systems. Serves Stokes County residents with lower incomes.

East Stokes Outreach Ministry serves people in the eastern part of Stokes County, near Walnut Cove. You can get fresh food from their pantry, low-cost clothing and household items from their thrift store, and emergency financial help when times are hard.

King Outreach Ministry helps families in western Stokes County during a crisis. You can get food from their pantry, clothing, help with prescription medicines, and help with energy and heating costs. They can also point you to other agencies that can help.

Second Harvest supplies food to pantries and meal programs in 18 counties, including Stokes County. Use their online Food Finder tool to find a free food pantry near you, or call them for help finding one.

A free clinic in Winston-Salem for people without health insurance who live in Stokes, Forsyth, or Davie County. It offers primary care, dental and vision services, mental health support, and help getting medications.

The county health department in Danbury offers WIC, child health and prenatal care, and adult health services. Call to ask about services and fees.

The county DSS office in Danbury handles Food and Nutrition Services (food stamps), Medicaid, and Work First cash assistance. It also runs LIEAP and the Crisis Intervention Program for heating and cooling bills. You can apply in person at 1010 Main Street or call to get started.

The county's resource center for adults 60 and older: congregate meals, home-delivered meals, SHIIP Medicare counseling, a summer fan program, and Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition vouchers. A satellite senior center in King serves the 27021 area at 107 White Rd, (336) 983-0751.

The county Veterans Service Officer helps veterans and their families with questions about veterans benefits, free of charge. The office is in the Ronald W. Reagan Building at the county government center in Danbury.

Free legal help for low-income people with civil problems like eviction, foreclosure, domestic violence protective orders, and denials of Social Security, Medicaid, or food stamps.
